3rd October, 1943: An accident in Alexandria

Although we had spoken last night, of returning in the morning, we slept in later. We decided to stay one more day and took for the main road out of Alexandria ready for tomorrow - Monday. Our leave was not over, but our money was, and to stay longer was really pointless.

For a change of scenery, we walked down to the front, and almost as soon as we got there, we witness an accident, a motor cycle cutting in front of a lorry on a corner. Both men were tossed under the lorry which pulled up. Both crawled from underneath as tho' nothing had happened. One lad has a terrible shaking, and I helped him to the side of the road. He was suffering from shock. Another man helped me to make him comfortable - and I ordered another to get a doctor. He seemed to be in capable hands and there was nothing more I could do, so I left.

The day was hot, so we retraced our steps back to the Y.M.C.A. for some good ice cream. After lunch, we spent some of our time lying in the shade of palm trees in a pleasant park. Instead of going to the late house, we decided upon going to the cinema early to see the "Amazing Mrs Holliday". This is a good show, but rather sentimental.
We had our tea at the Castle Club, a very quiet, select services club in a quieter part of the city. We attended a religious service, only four of us and the padre were present, at the Y.M.C.A
